10 Facts About Elephants


Today we have been researching elephants. These amazing creatures are huge gentle giants and one of the easiest to recognise animals on the planet. Elephants were Theo's, Aunty Zoey's, favourite animal and so they hold a special place in our family. 

Elephants are really beautiful creatures but we are saddened to say that without the help of charities these amazing animals could become completely extent in decades. Their homes keep being destroyed to make way for building projects and poachers (evil people who kill animals) are still killing elephants to illegally sell their ivory tusks.

Here are our top 10 facts about these amazing beasts!

1. The African elephant is the largest elephant and land creature in the world.
2. A male elephant can grow up to 4 metres in height and weigh up to 7 tonnes; whilst their females counterparts can still weigh in at a mere 3.5 tonnes.
3. The African elephant and the Asian elephant have different ears, that is how you can tell the difference.
4. Elephants can go snorkelling with their trunks.
5. Elephant families are super duper smart and they love to talk to each other by vocalising a range of calls and sounds. 

6. Female elephants have the longest pregnancies in the world. The average gestation period (pregnancy) of an elephant is about 640 to 660 days, or roughly 95 weeks.
7. Baby elephants stay with their mum for at least 10 years and often for longer.
8. African elephants can run at speeds of up to 40 km/h (25 mph), although most African elephants are more likely to have a top speed of 25 kph (around 15 mph).
9. They say an elephant never forgets. This could be because they are extremely intelligent creatures and have brains that can weigh as much as 4-6 kg.
10. All African elephants have tusks, whereas only some male Asian elephants have tusks, with females not having them at all.
