The 8 planets in our Solar System

Image
Our solar system is big but what are the main 8 planets called? The first one is called Mercury. Mercury was named after the Roman messenger god, because of its fast movements around the Sun. The second one is called Venus. Venus was named after the goddess of love and beauty. Venus was also the only planet to be named after a female, it was called Venus because it brightest among the five planets known to ancient astronomers. The third planet is called Earth. Unlike the other planets in the Solar System, in English, Earth does not directly share a name with an ancient Roman deity. The name Earth derives from the eighth century Anglo-Saxon word erda, which means ground or soil. It became eorthe later, and then erthe in Middle English. The fourth planet is called Mars. Mars was named by the ancient Romans for their god of war because its reddish colour was reminiscent of blood.   The fifth planet is Jupiter. Jupiter is the largest planet in the solar system. Fittingly, it was named afte

How Did The ISS Get Into Space?

Image
It would have been impossible to build the ISS on the ground and then launch it into space in one go; there is no rocket big enough or powerful enough. To get round this problem the Space Station is taken into space piece-by-piece and gradually built in orbit, approximately 400 km above the Earth's surface. Here are some facts about the ISS: 240 individuals from 19 countries have visited the International Space Station. The space station has been continuously occupied since November 2000 International crew of six people live and work while travelling at a speed of five miles per second, orbiting Earth about every 90 minutes. In 24 hours, the space station makes 16 orbits of Earth, travelling through 16 sunrises and sunsets. Peggy Whiteson set the record for spending the most total time living and working in space at 665 days on Sept. 2, 2017. The acre of solar panels that power the station means sometimes you can look up in the sky at dawn or dusk and see the spaceship flying over

Halley's Comet

Image
What is Halley's comet? Halley's comet is basically a dusty snowball that orbits the sun. There are more comets in our solar system but Halley’s comet is the most popular. Here are some facts about Halley's Comet: Halley’s comet is seen by earth every 75- 76 years  Halley’s comet was discovered i 1758  Its diameter is 11 kilometres.  Halley's comet is 75 years old Comets orbit the sun with their tails facing away from the sun at all times. Comets go at 2000 miles per hour. Halley's comet has a mass of 220 trillion kilograms On the 28th of July 2061 Halley's comet will visit earth If Halley's comet hit earth it would create a huge crater about 33 km deep and 89 km wide and would kill everyone in 238 kms  Halley's comet was named after Edmond Halley. Why is Pluto no longer a planet?

Image
When Mum and Daddy were kids, they were taught at school that there were nine planets: Mercury, Venus, Earth, Mars, Jupiter, Saturn, Neptune, Uranus and Pluto. But no when we learn about the planets at school we are told there are only 8 as Pluto is no longer classed as a planet! But why isn't it classed as a planet? The answer is that in August 2006 the International Astronomical Union downgraded Pluto to the status of a "dwarf planet". The reason was because Pluto didn't meet one of its criteria to be classed as a planet. The three criteria to be a planet are: It is in orbit around the Sun. It has sufficient mass to assume hydrostatic equilibrium (a nearly round shape). It has “cleared the neighborhood” around its orbit. Pluto didn't meet the third criteria - it "has not cleared its neighbouring region of other objects" Are there any other dwarf planets? So now Pluto isn't allowed to play with the bigger planets is it all on its own? The answer is

My Trip to Kennedy Space Center by Theo

Image
In August 2018 me, Dad, Sarah and her family went to Orlando Florida for a two week holiday. While we were there, one day me and my Dad went to the Kennedy Space Center.  When we first tried to get in we went to the wrong security entrance and got the correct directions to the right entrance. The first thing we did was we went on a bus tour of the center and we saw where rockets take off from, they are called launch pads.  While we were on the tour we saw the crawlers what takes the rockets from the main NASA building to the launch pads. The tracks they went down were as wide as an eight lane motorway. The crawler travels at 1mph with the rocket onboard and 2mph with no rocket onboard. It takes four hours to get from the main NASA building to the launch pads.  After the bus tour we got off and went round to look at the Apollo space missions. We saw and had lunch with a replica Apollo space rocket, it was very BIG!! After lunch we had a look round to see what  is involved in a launch/mi
