The 8 planets in our Solar System

Our solar system is big but what are the main 8 planets called?

The first one is called Mercury. Mercury was named after the Roman messenger god, because of its fast movements around the Sun.

The second one is called Venus. Venus was named after the goddess of love and beauty. Venus was also the only planet to be named after a female, it was called Venus because it brightest among the five planets known to ancient astronomers.

The third planet is called Earth. Unlike the other planets in the Solar System, in English, Earth does not directly share a name with an ancient Roman deity. The name Earth derives from the eighth century Anglo-Saxon word erda, which means ground or soil. It became eorthe later, and then erthe in Middle English.

The fourth planet is called Mars. Mars was named by the ancient Romans for their god of war because its reddish colour was reminiscent of blood.

The fifth planet is Jupiter. Jupiter is the largest planet in the solar system. Fittingly, it was named after the king of the gods in Roman mythology. In a similar manner, the ancient Greeks named the planet after Zeus, the king of the Greek pantheon.

Sixth planet is called Saturn. Saturn is named after the Roman god of harvest and time, the equivalent of the Greek god of time, Cronos. Out of the five visible planets (Mercury, Venus, Mars, Jupiter), Saturn is the most distant from Earth, at a distance of 10.6 AU and an average of 9.6 AU away from the Sun.

The seventh planet is called Uranus. Uranus is name after the ancient Greek god of the sky. Bode argued that as Saturn was the father of Jupiter, the new planet should be named for the father of Saturn.

The last planet is called Neptune. Neptune is named after the god of the sea because the planet is given this name due to its blue appearance.

Here is a way of remembering the planets:
